DESIDERIO
This is a film project created from a given starting point, ”Snow White.” When I started thinking about “Snow White”, I was interested in the apple that the step-mother offered to Snow White. She poisoned the red part of the apple to Snow White. According to the step-mother, the red part is sweeter.
The price of apples has been increasing in Japan, one time. It was not because of lack of apples. It was because there wasn't enough apples that was fully red. Even the taste is the same, people don’t buy apples that are not fully red. To get red apples, the temperature during the night needs to be much lower than the one during the day. It is getting more difficult to grow apples that is fully red, because of global warming.
Do apples need to be fully red to make people want to eat them?

This film was a collaboration work by Kika Brockstedt and Minshin Yano (me). Kika and I love food, so that we couldn’t help questioning what we are eating. The main opinion of us is food is too FAKE nowadays.
Fruits and vegetables are in the same shapes and colours in supermarket. Meat and fish are cut in pieces and packed in plastic. We can get most food in any season.
We are forgetting about we are eating lives, even it’s vegetable that we are eating. What we have in our mind is just unnatural DESIREs towards to food.
Kika and I want to question where those DESIRE are coming from.
Is it coming from consumer? but is it coming from producer? or is it because the advertisement?
The initial idea was that showing very craving food (like how food advertisement do)and show it’s fake by playing with them or destroy them. Kika started making fake food with paper clays. When she was making them, I really loved the visual image of white cube becoming white food in front of me. White is the colour reminds me of laboratory. We got the idea of showing how we make fake food in order to show how food is prepared in exaggerated way.
